Setting the Stage for a Relaxed Session

When a family books a session with me, I always emphasize the importance of setting a positive tone for the kids. Instead of making it a task, turn it into an adventure. Let them know it’s not something they have to do but something they get to do together as a family. It’s amazing how this simple shift in perspective can transform everyone’s attitude and set the stage for a fun and relaxed family portrait session.

The Beauty of Spontaneity as a Family Portrait Idea

One of my favorite family portrait ideas is to embrace spontaneity. Recently, I had a session in Snoqualmie with a family whose boys brought such sweet energy. I’m sure the parents had different expectations of how the session would go. When they arrived, their youngest had fallen asleep in the car and continued to nap even as they carried him down to the river. The boys were more interested in running and playing than sitting still for photos.

But guess what? That’s exactly what I expect and embrace during my sessions—playing, fun, tickling, spinning, snuggles, laughing, exploring. This session was no different, and I wasn’t worried one bit. As I clicked my shutter, I knew these moments would become some of my favorite images of the season. Their gallery is bursting with life, love, and the beautiful chaos of their “right now.”

Family Portrait Ideas for Capturing Authentic Moments

I understand the stress and worry that can come with wanting perfect family photos. As a mother of six, I know firsthand the chaos of trying to coordinate multiple personalities and desires. But family photography with me is about capturing your family as you are, in all your beautiful, fleeting moments.

Here are a few family portrait ideas to keep in mind:

  1. Embrace the Outdoors: Snoqualmie Valley offers breathtaking natural backdrops. Whether it’s a lush forest, a serene river, or an open field, let nature set the scene for your portraits. Even more, it allows for kids to stretch their legs and feel less like they are having photos taken.
  2. Go with the Flow: Allow your kids to be themselves. If they want to run, play, or explore, let them. These candid moments often result in the most cherished photographs. Don’t worry, mama. I’m guiding and offering family portrait ideas to create beautiful moments for the camera. We are not just letting the kids run wild!
  3. Dress Comfortably: Choose outfits that make you feel good and allow for movement. Coordinating without being too matchy-matchy can create a harmonious look without stifling individuality. For more tips on outfits, check out my Ultimate What to Wear Guide.
  4. Include Pets: If you have dogs, bring them along! Pets can add an extra layer of warmth and authenticity to your family photos.
