Hi, I'm Neyssa

If you’re wondering when to do newborn photos, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions I get from expectant parents is about timing. Whether you’re weeks away from your due date or already cuddling that sweet baby in your arms, I’m here to help you feel prepared and confident.

As a Seattle area lifestyle newborn photographer who comes to your home—whether you’re in Issaquah, Redmond, Mercer Island, Seattle, Snoqualmie, or somewhere nearby—my sessions are designed to be relaxed, joyful, and stress-free. No need to pack a diaper bag or worry about leaving the house with a days-old baby. You just focus on snuggling your little one while I capture your family’s connection in the comfort of your own space.

When to do Newborn Photos: The Ideal Timing for Lifestyle Portraits

The “sweet spot” for newborn photography is typically within the first 7 to 14 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to be sleepier and more snuggly, which makes it easier to capture those curled-up poses and tender moments. Their tiny features are still fresh and new, and there’s something incredibly magical about documenting those early days.

That said, one of the biggest perks of lifestyle newborn photography is flexibility. If your baby is already 3 or 4 weeks old—or older—that’s okay too! In fact, babies tend to be more awake and alert as they get a little older, which can lead to some adorable eye contact and expressions. Every stage has its own charm, and there’s no wrong time to document your growing family.

When to do Newborn Photos: Why Earlier Can Be Easier (But Not Required)

While I absolutely love photographing newborns at any age, earlier sessions do have some perks:

  • Sleepier babies: Newborns in the first two weeks often sleep more soundly and frequently, which allows for easier transitions between poses and less fussing.
  • That fresh newborn look: Tiny fingers, flaky skin, and those curly womb-like poses are more prominent early on.
  • Less stimulation: Younger babies are less reactive to their environment, making it easier to capture those peaceful, cozy moments.

But if your baby is more awake or your toddler is bouncing off the walls (I see you, fellow mom), no worries. My laid-back approach means we embrace the beautiful chaos and go with the flow.

If the thought of having photos so soon after having a baby is stressful, I get it. My youngest child struggled to gain weight and nurse. We were spending so much time at the doctor’s, I couldn’t handle photos right away. So we did them when we were more settled, she was 3.5 weeks. Guess what, she was still tiny and the photos beautiful. All that to say, it’s okay if you’re not feeling ready right away. We will do your baby’s newborn photos when your family is ready.

When to Book Your Newborn Session

If you’re currently pregnant, the best time to book your newborn session is during your third trimester. Think of it as part of your nesting checklist—like washing baby clothes or setting up the crib. Booking ahead ensures I reserve space on my calendar around your due date, and it gives you peace of mind knowing your memories will be beautifully captured.

However, if your baby has already arrived and you’re just now thinking about photos, don’t stress. Reach out! I leave room in my schedule for those “oh my gosh, how is my baby already two weeks old?!” moments.

The Beauty of In-Home Newborn Sessions

Newborn photography doesn’t need to be complicated or intimidating. By photographing your family at home, we keep things low-stress and authentic. Whether you’re cuddled on the couch, feeding your baby in the nursery, or enjoying a quiet moment in bed, I capture the real magic of those early days—the snuggles, the connection, the love.

Worried your home isn’t magazine-worthy? Don’t sweat it. I’m not there to photograph your house—I’m there to capture your family’s love and connection. I use natural light and angles that highlight emotion, not clutter.

Not sure you’re “naturally photogenic”? You’re not alone there either. While I let moments unfold organically, I’m there to gently guide you into poses that feel relaxed, comfortable, and photograph beautifully. I’ve got you.

And yes, dogs (and cats) are always welcome in your photos too.
