Hi, I'm Neyssa

What to Wear for a Maternity Photo Session You’ll Love

Let’s just say it — growing a human is incredible. It’s also exhausting, a little uncomfortable, and filled with more body changes than you ever expected (hello, sudden cleavage and disappearing ankles). So when it comes to what to wear for a maternity photo session, my biggest goal is simple: I want you to feel like yourself — on your best day.

Not a curated, filtered, Pinterest-perfect version of you. Just you — glowing, anticipating, and fully wrapped up in the magic of this fleeting moment before everything changes.

What to Wear for a Maternity Photo Session: Show Off the Bump

Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, your maternity photos are about celebrating this chapter of motherhood — and that means showing off that beautiful bump.

I always recommend choosing something that hugs your bump, either with a fitted dress or a style that allows you to gently frame it with your hands. That shape is the star of the show — and I want you to see your strength and beauty in every image.

If flowy feels more your speed, go for it! Just avoid styles that are overly boxy or without shape, as they can hide the bump or feel more frumpy than flattering in photos. A wrap dress, a soft maxi with a defined waist, or anything that drapes with intention can be both comfortable and stunning.

Choosing What to Wear as Your Body Changes in Pregnancy

Throughout pregnancy — especially in the third trimester — your body can change quickly. One day a top fits perfectly, the next it’s suddenly showing a lot more cleavage than expected. It happens to the best of us (ask me how I know).

When deciding what to wear for a maternity photo session, try on your outfit just a few days before your session. Make sure it still feels good and lets you move freely. A little skin showing is beautiful. However, if you’re adjusting constantly or feeling self-conscious, it may distract from your connection and joy.

Comfort Is Key to a Beautiful Maternity Photo Session

Let’s be honest: if you’re tugging at your top or wincing in shoes, that’s going to show. My sessions are playful, relaxed, and involve gentle movement, so it’s important you can walk, sit, and snuggle comfortably.

Do a mini “test drive” at home:

  • Sit, stand, and walk in your outfit.
  • Pick up your toddler if you have one.
  • Twirl in front of a mirror (okay, maybe that one’s optional).

Also, think about footwear. If we’re on a trail in the Pacific Northwest, skip the heels and choose something stable and comfy. Trust me — I’m focused on your connection and your bump, not your shoes.

What to Wear for a Maternity Photo Session: Family Styling Tips

You’ll be the focus of the session, but your family plays a role too — and their outfits should support, not distract from, your look.

For partners: Stick to classic pieces that feel like them — a fitted Henley or button-up shirt with jeans or chinos is perfect. Earth tones, soft blues, and neutrals pair well with most maternity styles.

For kids: Choose clothes that allow them to move and play. Pull accent colors from your outfit or accessories. Layers and textures (like knits or denim) photograph beautifully. Skipping logos or neon helps keep the focus on your family’s connection.

And if you’re a cozy Pacific Northwest family, lean into that vibe! Beanies, scarves, cardigans — all welcome here. You don’t need to copy a beige-only Instagram feed to have beautiful photos.
