For this week’s Lesson with the Lees, I thought I’d share what’s in my camera bag! People are always curious what lenses I use or what camera body, so here it all is! Let’s start with the bag. I just LOVE my new camera bag. And it is new to me. Its is the Kelly Moore Mimi. My favorite part is that it doesn’t look like a camera bag, so often I use it as a day bag or the diaper bag. Then I can have my nice camera with me all the time and I know that it is safe and sound (that also means I will often find random things from my kids when I’m on location with a client!).
My camera body is the Canon Mark II 5D. I love it. I know there is a newer version, but I love my camera and am not ready to upgrade! (Photo taken with iPhone).
You’d be surprised to learn, but I only have 2 lenses! Yup, that’s right, I’m a pro photographer with 2 lenses! My zoom lens, and go to for chasing toddlers is my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L. It is one of my favorites for portrait sessions because of the versatility I can get with it.
My other lens is a Canon 50mm f/1.4. It is my favorite in low light situations, or for capturing little babies, or for creating those beautiful blurry backgrounds that I so very much love! Recently I have used it for entire sessions.
I also keep an external flash (Canon Speedlite 580EXII) in my bag. I don’t use it often, but it is great when I’m on location and there just isn’t much available light. I also use it when I want to capture my kids or my family when it is dark and dreary.
There are also a few other miscellaneous items in my bag. Business cards, chapstick, extra memory cards, a lens cleaner, a camera remote, and a battery charger. I also try to keep things like bubbles in case I need to pull out the “big guns” when I’m working with kids! You can also see my camera strap, the Black Rapid, a comfy and functional alternative to the strap that comes with the camera. Often I will find fun things like blocks or plastic food that my dear daughter, Sawyer, has added to the bag for fun.
What’s on my wishlist? Just in case you’re trying to decide what to get me for Christmas, I’d love to add a nice macro lens and that beautiful Canon 70-200 f/2.8L. But I’m more than happy with what I have for capturing my own kids and yours!
Want to add to your camera bag? I recommend NOT talking to the guy at the camera store. He will most likely point you in the wrong direction for which lens to buy or which bag you want. I admit, even I have been led astray by the man behind the counter who thinks he knows better than me. Not anymore! In my workshop we spend time talking about lenses and how to know which is the right one for you. You will be informed and able to make the decision on your own after taking the workshop! So make sure you sign up for one of the few remaining spots for my October 19th workshop.
P.S. The holidays are coming! Make sure you book your family session while the fall colors are still here. I have only a few weekend spots left for 2013! Contact me (email@example.com) to book your session today. Just think how beautiful your holiday cards will look with updated family photos!
