This week I wanted to provide you with a first hand photography workshop review of the DSLR Basics Workshop. Laurie, who attended my October workshop, was so generous to spend her time writing her experience and her story to share with you. If you’re on the fence about if you can learn to use your camera, let Laurie’s beautiful story inspire you.Laurie’s Photography Story:
My 2013 New Year’s resolution was to learn how to take better photographs. For most of 2013 that meant using our “fancy camera” more often, but on auto. I occasionally got lucky and captured some nice pictures – but only if the lighting and other factors were perfect for my camera’s auto settings. I knew I was missing out on some moments I wanted to treasure with my family that didn’t happen in perfect lighting situations.
Then, I had a chance encounter with Neyssa Lee at a park in July. As our little boys played, we chatted while her little girl cuddled with her. We chatted about life as new moms and planned to get together again sometime over the summer. She had mentioned she was a photographer, but I didn’t think much of it at the time and filed that information away for future family photo needs. Our plans to get together didn’t work out as our summers got busier, but we kept in touch. I followed her blog and in the fall, I found out she was offering a Photography Workshop.
I enthusiastically signed up, not quite sure what to expect. I worried that I didn’t know enough about my camera to be successful, but Neyssa quickly put my mind at ease. She couldn’t have been more welcoming or encouraging on that drizzly Saturday, October morning we gathered at her house to build confidence. There was one other fabulous woman in my class, who was at the same level as I was in her photography skills. During that morning, we bonded and learned and practiced. It was so much fun, low pressure and amazing to find success so quickly.
Neyssa taught us how ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed work together to create beautiful photographs. The most helpful part was being able to work with moms and babies who came in the afternoon. It was amazing to be able to practice our newfound skills and have guidance from Neyssa. Taking it to the next level, she even offered advice on how to capture more artistic shots with backlighting and details. The best compliment of the day was when we were asked to choose our favorite photos from the session to give to the moms who had donated their time. What a way for Neyssa to show how much confidence she had in us as budding photographers!
That Growing Confidence Workshop day has completely transformed how I look at the world through my camera. I am now able to tell stories through my photographs, catch meaningful details that I would have otherwise overlooked and capture the day to day life with my family with artistry and beauty. As I look through the photos I have captured in the past few months, I feel like I am able to enjoy the sense of wonder that my little boy has for the world and moments with my family that tell the story of the day rather than just one of those “we were here” pictures. What an amazing gift for my family!
Beyond my family, friends have started to ask me to take photos for the special days in their lives and moments in their family’s stories. My camera has stayed in manual mode and I make the choices about the photos I want to capture than just feel lucky with what I get. What an honor it is to be a part of birthday parties and baby photo shoots, all because of a New Year’s resolution, a chance meeting with Neyssa and her Workshop!
Thank you, Laurie for sharing your story and your photos. I feel so honored that I was a part of your transformation and I hope other women will be inspired to take the leap and take control of their cameras!
