This week I challenge you to “refuse to say cheese” and capture the sounds of childhood. If you were to sit and think (or maybe just listen) of what sounds come to mind when your kids play, what would that be? Would you hear the low lull of a truck engine, or the clanking of a whisk in a mixing bowl? I know from experience that childhood is not in the least bit quiet. Milo & Sawyer make all kinds of noises!
When the kids met Hudson in the hospital, Hudson had a gift for each of her older siblings. Sawyer received a baby doll – something to care for while mommy cared for Hudson. Sawyer loved her gift. Anytime we went somewhere that had a baby doll, that’s what she would choose to play with. In the past few weeks, how Sawyer plays with her baby doll has changed. She started holding the baby upright over her shoulder, while bouncing up and down and shh-ing her baby to sleep. It was exactly how Derek and I calm Hudson.
When I think of how I want to capture the sounds of childhood, I hear the sound of Sawyer’s little “ssssss” (because she can’t quite say “shhhhh!” As you look at this image, listen. Can you hear the sounds of childhood?
As you go through your day, capture your children as they play, look (and listen) for those moments when you can capture the sounds of childhood!
