Your blog is an important tool for your business. However, there is more to blogging than simply sharing your photographs and hitting publish. These are simple blog writing tips that can help you have more effective blogs.

I confess. Before I learned better, I made many of these mistakes. As you read these tips think of them as blogging writing tips to help you improve.

The first blog writing tip is to avoid is using overly cute titles.

If your reader has to think about what your post is about, they are not likely to click in. People are busy, with plenty of information pulling for their attention. Your title isn’t the time to be cute and creative. That’s a big blogging mistake.

Instead, use titles that are clear and tell the reader what to expect. Look at the title of this post as an example. It tells you exactly what you will find when you read this post, blog writing tips for a more effective blog.

Next, do not include your location in every title.

As you can tell from the first two blog writing tips being all about the title, the title is very important. When Google is scanning for things people have searched, the title is place it will begin.

I do not know who started the trend of sharing their location in every single title. They likely thought, I really want to rank well for my city, so I’m going to try to stuff that keyword into every post. It would look something like “What to Wear for Family Photos | Seattle Family Photographer.” While yes, I am a Seattle Family Photographer, having that in every post title is actually detrimental.

Without going too deep into SEO, you can only rank for one particular keyword twice. After that, your pages are competing with each other for those two spots. With that, using your location in every title is a blogging mistake that will cost you web traffic.

A fellow photographer, and dear friend, share more about SEO terms if you’d like to dive more into learning SEO for your website.

Another blog writing tip is to serve your client or potential client.

As a photography business coach, I cannot stress this point enough. A blog is more than a place to show off your beautiful photographs. It is also not a place to talk about yourself and everything you love. Use your blog to serve your clients. Help them have an amazing session, help a potential client get to know your style and approach to photography. This blog writing tip is about painting the picture of what it is like to work with you. Yes, you will be infused throughout your work. However, explaining things like “I just love photographing families” does not give the reader any valuable information.

You are a photographer, they hope you love what you do.

When you writing blogs with the focus on serving, you will start to see that you’re attracting more clients who align with you and your brand.

Another tip is to share your content.

When you are spending time writing quality content, share it! This blog writing tip is going beyond thinking “if you build it they will come.” Sure, blogging properly will help you attract clients naturally, with time.

However, you can also serve your newsletter list, your social media audience, and more by repurposing that content.

The biggest blog writing tip is to simply start.

Blogging is one of the most overlooked parts of photography businesses. As a family photographer, blogging has helped my business grow, helped my clients have smoother sessions, helped me repel people who are not the right fit for my business. It also saves me time in the rest of my content creation process. Blogging can do the same thing for your business.

If these 5 blog writing tips feel overwhelming, take a breath. Blogging can not only be simple, it can be fun – especially when your clients start telling you how helpful a post you wrote was!

I needed to hear this! Just start! So good. And I also like to write overly cute titles, so thanks for the gentle reminder to avoid this!
